Some things never change.
As far as Logan could tell the school and all the kids in it had always been in a confused state of chaos. Probably had something to do with who they were. For that matter, far as he was concerned every damn memory was suspect. He had no idea what was true in his past. It made things a little dicey.
This situation was a prime example. Here he was riding his Harley down the city streets of New York while all around him it was business as usual. People talked on their cell phones and waited for buses and hurried along to wherever the hell it was they were going just like they always did. Were they having bad dreams at night?
And what about Sam?
Logan looked down at the slender female arms that were wrapped around him. Something about her triggered deep-seated feelings of anger, though he wasn’t exactly sure what it was. There was a primal instinct, a hunting instinct that pulled at him even right now. Forget the whole cat and dog nonsense, this was something far more than that. So…why did he ask her to come along a drink then?
Who the hell knows.
His mouth worked into a familiar scowl as he slowed the bike and pulled up alongside the curb of one of his favorite dives. He parked it between a Volvo and a taxi and shut the bike off. Looking over his shoulder as he pulled the half-smoked stub of a cigar out and stuck it in his mouth, he motioned toward the bar. “Sorry, this ain’t exactly tha Ritz.”

Please don’t kill me, please don’t kill me, please don’t kill me kept reveling through the shape shifter’s thoughts as the bike thundered down the road. It was a smooth ride winding around streets and then down a deep darkened treed road. Oh, here we go. Sam just jump off and run! Before her thoughts could register to her legs, the couple stopped at a roadside joint.
The building was small and wreaked of havoc. The sign above the places was half lit as the letters were in desperate need of repair. Heck, the entire place could have used an overhaul. All Sam could think of was a way to get away. It wasn’t until they disembarked from the bike and Logan’s comment, that the feline decided to see just exactly what he had in mind.
”Sorry, this ain’t exactly tha Ritz”
Looking up, the last letter of the bar sign creaked slightly then slanted. It creaked more as it was about to fall down. A couple of men trying to be some form of biker gang came struggling out drunk. They stumbled around grumbling and laughing. Another lady appeared in the doorway with nothing more than a handkerchief across her chest and a very short leather skirt. Sam wore her normal brown tank top and leather pants adorned with a nice brown leather jacket. Her eyes went to the woman, then the sign and she remarked back. “It ain’t exactly anything.”
Was he just going in for a drink? Another flash came barreling in. She was in a bar with Logan before and they were actually getting along like good friends would. Maybe that’s all this was. It was that or he was just trying to get her toasted before he rammed those damn claws through her body down some dark alley.
Her body began to walk the strut of a model, something she could not help, but an influence of being a feline from her mutation. Sam never flaunted her physique on purpose, it was all natural to her. The other woman gave a roll of the eyes towards Samantha and continued on her way. The feral simply ignored it and continued inside.

“Hey Candy,” Logan said to the girl as he started in to the bar. She was a regular. Probably not really named Candy, but she sure didn’t seem to be able to keep her wrapper on. Logan smirked. “How’s tricks?” It earned him a scowl, though less fierce than the one she had given Sam.
“Not bad Logan. You ever need a real woman, let me know.” It was pretty clear who that was directed at.
Logan just looked her over. “Will do,” he said and then moved into the bar.
It was the usual crowd. An old man appeared to be sleeping at one of the small tables in the center of the room. That guy was a fixture in the bar. In fact, Logan was pretty sure that that guy was a fixture in every hellhole dive across the country.
Sam was in there trying not to look out of her element, trying to mask the intoxicating fear and adrenaline that was radiating off of her. Logan held up two fingers to the bartender and turned to study Sam with a stoic look on his face. The silence wasn’t bad. Hell, Logan actually loved the silence. But he could tell that she was just standing there waiting for him to make the first move, so he spoke up about the time that two large beers were delivered to him.
“How long we known each other now, Sam?”

Looking around, it seemed that everyone was either from a biker gang, strip club, or badly managed gym. Most of them were already drunk which made Sam question just what time of day it was. Her mind relaxed on that thought for about a second. It was then Logan spoke again.
You know the old cartoons where the dog sneaks up on the cat and then scares it to fly up to the ceiling where the poor kitty is hanging by its toenails. Oh, let’s not forget that every hair is straight out like an electric shock too. Well, if Sam could have had mutated superpowers to fly, she would have. Her body flew around and it was then the realization of extreme paranoia began settling in. All that was in front of her was Logan, extremely calm, and two cold beers.
Think fast pussycat or you’re gonna have to explain just why in the hell you’re so jumpy, then you’ll never get away.
Her eyes closed a bit showing the old Sam and trying her hardest to put the raging fear in the back of her mind. The voice was low and gentle, not revealing any shakiness or the fact her heart could have leapt out of her chest at any given moment. “As long as I’ve been at the mansion of course”, came the answer with a smile grabbing one bottle.
Before he could say another word, she was chugging it down. The entire contents of that bottle gurgling down her throat as though she had been deprived of water for days. Once the bottle was emptied, the feline put the glass on the counter and waved over for another as a rush of air came up in a decently loud belch. Placing two fingers over lips, Sam felt the blood rush to her cheeks in embarrassment. “Oh, excuse me.”
Once another cold one was placed on the counter, it was decided to take it little slower. Her eyes went to Logan feeling the effects of the beer kinda quickly. Probably should have remember when I ate last.
“Why do you ask?” she decided on wondering why he brought her here.

Logan narrowed his eyes as he watched her chug an entire beer down without taking a breath. She punctuated this with a healthy belch and then contrasted that with a feminine ‘excuse me’. With a snort that was about as close to a laugh as it came, Logan shook his head. “Not bad.”
But her answer wasn’t what he was looking for.
“I got that,” he said as he turned toward her and leaned one elbow against the countertop. “What I meant was…how long ago was that?”
The question was loaded and he knew it. But he stood the chance of finding out a whole lot more by keeping this simple.

Her answer didn’t seem to please the feral as he leaned there with an immense stare. At least that’s what Sam took it as. Just what was he trying to get out of the feline? She looked back to him and looked away quickly. Just how long ago was that anyway? With all the nightmares and that darn pendant looming over, it was hard for even the mutant to ascertain the correct answer. And to Sam, a wrong answer only meant a stomach full of adamantium later.
“I….Well….you’re having the dreams too aren’t you”, she proclaimed. Maybe he could give her some answers.
Hardly.
Another flashback came in. This time it was in a cold room, like a hospital room, but it was somewhere else. Was it the mansion? A gash was on her arm. But didn’t I get that falling out of a tree as a child with her fath….? No, my father died before I was born, didn’t he?
With a new bottle now in hand, sapphire eyes stared at the glass. “I….I don’t remember. I keep getting images or flashbacks, conflicting ones. I’m not sure what’s real anymore.” Watching the liquid stir, she took another drink. Afterwards, her eyes met his. “I think I’m losing it Logan.” Eyes watered slightly as looked away again, but the feline was able to keep away the tears from frustration (or maybe it was exhaustion from lack of sleep).

Logan lifted his brows at her question and turned his attention toward his own half empty bottle. “I can’t remember a time that I wasn’t havin’ bad dreams,” he said quietly. It was all a tangle of disjointed imagery for Logan. It was labs and white coats and faceless people and blood. It was torment and agony that stretched back as far as he could remember…and beyond that.
He shook it off as the hint of what was always there nudged at his sub-conscience. He hadn’t been able to figure any of it out before and doubted that half a beer and a pretty brunette was going to change much.
“Let me ask ya somethin’ else,” he said as he ignored both her comment about losing it and the underlying question about his dreams. “When’s tha last time you saw Hank?”

He was ignoring her plea for help. Nothing new. Her own dreams involved dinosaurs to men in pieces in some building somewhere foreign to a romantic night with someone who now lost his memory (probably including that night). All of these images were garbled up not making any sense. There were controversial images that stretched the mind to insanity.
Now Logan was there asking about Hank. “Hank?...Oh Dr. McCoy”, she began literally trying to remember the last time she had seen or even spoke to the blue beast. Closing her eyes, the feline tried to get a flashback to come but it refused to cooperate. Logan was trying to get information and Sam was the life line he chose to get them.
Bad choice.
Fear that he would dismember ever limb was stirring slightly. “Logan…I…is something wrong? Is he missing or hurt or in trouble?” The feline mothering nature abruptly took over. Now was not the time, but Sam did care for those in the mansion. Why? She couldn’t even remember half of them.
Come on Sam, find something before you’re executed before the bartender and every customer here! Nothing would surface. “I’m not being much help. I know he helped me”, she continued feeling a tingle in the arm that now rendered a small scar from when the two first met. A hand rubbed over the coat where the scar would be. “Damn it, why can’t I remember anything?” she scoffed finally.
For some unknown reason, Samantha stepped closer and placed a hand on his arm in a comforting manner. “I’m sorry Logan, I don’t remember.”
When she touched him, a flashback from hell hit like a ton of bricks.
Adamantium claws were out and about to slash through her stomach.
Quickly releasing the small grip, the feline jumped back with a gasp. “Why did you bring me here Logan? What’s the real reason for these questions?” she asked with shaking tone.

Logan paused, his attention drifting from the conversation at momentarily as his sharp senses focused on something that made the hairs on the back of his neck stand at attention. Samantha continued to talk, but he was only half listening to her and completely unaware that he was gripping his beer bottle so tightly. Creature senses flared up in him, whispering irresistible commands that this was the time to fight.
And then the moment was passed. Logan looked down to see the white-knuckle grip he had on the bottle and forced himself to relax, catching the last part of her nervous question and regarding her with a wry kind of expression.
“Why did you bring me here Logan? What’s the real reason for these questions?”
“I was hopin’ ta get lucky…” he said drily. There was an intentional pause before he continued, “…and find some answers.”
Growing tired of the games, Logan set his beer down and took a step closer, leaning forward to clearly invade her space. “Why so nervous, kitty cat?”

He did invade her space. I defensive growl escaped followed by reddening of the cheeks. Would this be the right time? Sam backed away. Sapphire eyes narrowed revealing slits, the beginning of the change. Fortunately, her body didn't react with a total change surprising the heck of the feline. Even his words about getting lucky didn’t register.
Reaching into her leather jacket, Samantha pulled out the demon pendant that had been traumatizing her life since waking up dumbfounded in her room. The words inscribed on this pendant were embedded in the brain. The soft metal warmed the mutant’s hand passing it over to Logan. Before he could even look at it, she began reciting the inscription as though the pendant controlled her mouth.
One who is born of two peoples One people torn in two Beware The younger will devour the old
Blue eyes Closes on eye Two lives Become one
Into the vallety of the goddess The one will lead them She who belongs to none Must bury them all
Blue eyes Closes on eye Two lives Become one
Blood will be spilled Heed the warning All will be lost
“I knew what the pendant said before I even knew I had it. I don’t remember where, when, or who gave it to me. It’s been torturing me.” Eyes looked down feeling the touch of fear begin to overwhelm her entire being. “All will be lost just won’t go away. People will die Logan and I think I’m responsible. Even my own death…..by….your hands…or claws I should say.” Taking a step back, Sam looked at him ready to bolt at a moment’s notice. Only there was a chair behind her. Tripping over it slightly, the feline whimpered softly. “Damn it.”

In the short span of time that Logan had been affiliated with Xavier he had met a great deal of people of all walks and backgrounds. There was Hank, the fuzzy doc who holed himself up down in the basement half the time. There was Xavier of course, a whole host of students who frankly were more than he could bear most of the time, and then there was Sam. The most he could figure out about Sam was that she was easy on the eyes but maybe a little rattled in the cage. Hearing her lymric didn’t do much to change that opinion.
Logan was a good many things, but perhaps ‘appreciater of fine poetry’ was not amongst them. When she finished he had just downed the rest of his second beer and he punctuated it with a barely suppressed belch.
At least she was being straight with him, even if it was with fear and trembling.
“For crap’s sake, I ain’t gonna hurt ya,” he finally blurted out. “If I wanted ta gut ya why would I bring ya to a fine place like this,” he said gesturing around the craphole. “It ain’t my claws you gotta worry about,” he said, but didn’t elaborate.
He took a seat on the stool and leaned both elbows on the bar, looking at Samantha’s reflection across the bar in a dingy mirror with stacked glasses in front of it. Her reflection was distorted by the curves of the glasses. “Well I don’t have any poetry, but I can at least relate that somethin’s funny. Feels like I’ve been at that school for years,” he said about Xavier’s. “But I only got there last month.”
That didn’t seem right.

Somehow, his words did seem to bring any comfort or relief. If someone were to come up behind her now, however, she’d probably make residence stuck to the ceiling by fingernails. As he turned to finish his beer and possibly order another, Sam took a large gulp and finished beer number two. Now, with a small buzz brewing and nerves calming down minutely she took a good look at him through the shambled mirror. Something other than fear was beginning to make its way up into her heart.
No, I couldn’t possibly have feelings for someone trying to kill me. Then another flash came in. This time it was in a room. They were in a brawl. Then she came dangerously close to..
Oh boy, I do or I did, why can’t I remember?
Taking a risk Sam thought she sensed concern for the first time. Maybe he wasn’t trying to kill her but get answers. Could Logan need them just like she did? Taking a step forward, the feline placed a hand on his shoulder. “I think we’re not the only ones experiencing these weird feelings. I overheard some of the students talking about dreams they couldn’t explain.” Waving a hand to the bartender, she ordered yet another one. Whether that was a good idea was another story. Her hand didn’t stay long as courtesy (and part fear).
She took a stool beside him and looked forward. “We need to find answers.” Samantha went one step further. “What else do you remember? Did we, um? I…uh…that poem is inscribed on the pendant…yeah.”
Open mouth, insert foot.

Logan lifted a brow at what she said next. More specifically what was left unsaid. He looked at her sitting there next to him, letting his eyes drop slowly, looking over every square inch of her body without shame before looking back up into her eyes. “Nah,” he said with a wolfish grin, “believe me, if we-um-you’d remember it.”
He left off the part that so would he.
But this was a nice distraction. And it had been awhile since he-um.
Then the thought occurred to him and he spun her around by the knees to look him right in the face. “What do you remember?” He demanded.

What an egotistical, self-centered, jacka….
The stool had spun before that thought could complete itself. Jerry the mouse would have been proud. Sam was able to imitate his scared looked and the large swallow she took before attempting to lie (answer) the question at hand. What did she remember?
“I told you….it’s images, flashes…um…feelings”, Sam told him. Why the hell was she getting so afraid about doing “it”? Because the so-sure-of-himself-almighty-wolverine said so? She'd remember it? Now he reminded her of Bobby. Why? she still couldn't remember.
Well either she’s horrible in the sack or his big mouth is going to get him into trouble. Sapphire eyes narrowed and her mood changed to a sarcastic grin. “What makes you so certain that a kiss would be something you could so easily forget yourself Casanova?”
Oops, the cat went out of the bag even if Sam wasn’t sure if it was truth.

“Feelings?”
His own heart felt like a dead weight on some days. Some days it felt like he was so covered over with emotional scars that he forgot how to have feelings. Other days he thought that was just another load of crap he’d learned to buy into. Either way, the word itself didn’t taste good in his mouth. He snorted.
And then Sam’s whole demeanor changed. She looked over at him with a knowing smirk, taunting him, or at least trying to with her words. He let a moment pass in silence between them before he spoke.
“Nobody said nothin’ about a kiss, darlin’.” Logan put a hand on her knee. “So you got a thing for bad boys or what? One minute yer shakin’ with fear, and the next.” He sniffed her, catching something about her scent that he hadn’t smelled in a long time. “So if it’s gonna help us talk without all tha weird drama, I know a cheap hotel that rents by tha hour.”
