For Amara, it was like she woke suddenly from a very bad dream.
Only it wasn't a dream. And waking didn't mean it was over.
There was an explosion of sound in the castle complex as Commander Guthrie and a mass of SHIELD transports set off in pursuit of the King. They were followed by dozens of human-hunting Sentinels.
The tumult masked her cry of rage and humiliation.
Amara remembered everything.

Almost from the moment that the first tower fell, Doug Ramsey had taken charge. First from his cell phone as he raced to his command center, then in the heart of Information Central as he stood before the mosaic of glowing television screens and barked orders at SHIELD operatives.
He wasn't sure how the attack - for that's what it must be - had been managed, but he was positive that Magneto had rushed off in pursuit of whatever human terrorists were responsible.
As he watched the transports take off to a thunderous roar of jet engines and Sentinel rockets, Doug finally started to relax a little.
He had done a good job raising the alarm. Magneto would be proud of him.
That was when Doug realized that he wasn't alone.

She faded from the shadows into the pale light cast by computer screens and televisions.
Doug spoke her name in surprise.
Amara said nothing, but Doug was a master of language - spoken or unspoken. It was his gift. He could tell that she was frightened from the way she trembled. He could see that she'd been crying.
But there was something else there, too....a fire in her eyes he hadn't seen in....
With a sob, she launched herself at him. Falling heavily into his arms.
He embraced her.
He could feel her warmth and heartbeat as she wept against his chest.

She didn't speak. She couldn't speak.
She could only tremble in his arms.
And weep.

He didn't know what to do. He didn't know how to react.
For so long this young woman he had wanted had been lifeless...emotionless. Childlike. And here she was...clearly terrified by all of the explosions and calamity that was going on outside.
Like the child he thought she was, he tried to comfort her.

In silence, she raised her head. Her lips found his.
She covered his mouth with hers.
Heart racing, Amara tore almost desperately at his clothes. Doug had to brace and balance to keep from being knocked off his feet.
It didn't help.
Together, they fell to the floor.

It was darker here, in the shadows under the viewscreens. Without a word, she pulled at her own clothes and let them fall away. She was mostly a silhouette as she forced him back and fell on top of him.
Doug felt her heartbeat against his skin. The sound of his own was all that filled his ears. For the very first time, Amara offered herself to him.
With only a moment's hesitation, he accepted.

He wasn't aware how much time had passed when he opened his eyes at last. He was lost in the rhythm of her breathing.
When he did was when he noticed that something was terribly wrong.
The fire was no longer in Amara's eyes.
It was leaking out of them.
Even someone who wasn't a master of language, spoken or not, would have understood the look of fury on the young woman's face. She glared at him and continued to give him what he so often stolen from her.
And then she ignited her stolen ability once again.

Doug didn't have time to say much as the water within his flesh turned to vapor.
The final word of the boy wonder was simply "Oh...".
Amara glowed red hot and knelt on the floor for a very long time. The room around her turned molten and the metals and plastics ran like water.
It was peaceful, she decided.
She let it all burn.
