Jamie took the letter. He made sure it got into a large enough jacket pocket, and didn't get crumpled up.
"I suppose I should be leaving. After all, I have a job. Not that this wasn't very nice. You are a lovely girl."
NO. BAD JAMIE! We NEVER make it seem even remotely like we are flirting with royalty. Magnus would remove several important parts of your anatomy and have them bronzed! Just say good bye, leave and don't come back.
"So, thank you. Good bye."
He left, leaving Kurt and Katherine alone.

The poor guy just couldn’t get out of there fast enough. It was cute, but also made her feel a little sad. She didn’t like being intimidating to people just because of who she was. She was probably the least intimidating person in the world, but because she was Princess Katherine, daughter of the King, people either tripped all over themselves when they tried to speak to her, or just avoided her completely.
“Thank you for coming, and for you help,” she said, rising to her feet, but he was already to the door, and before she could accompany him out, he was already gone. Watching the door close behind him, she slumped back into her chair in a very unladylike manner.
“Don’t let me keep you... not that I could have anyways. Practically ran out the door,” she grumbled to herself, brushing her hair back out of her face. It was only then that she caught a sight out of the corner of her eye that caused her body to immediately stiffen. Darn, she’d forgotten he was there.
“Sorry, I... hi?” she scrambled up in the chair to sit properly.

Comfortable anonymity was suddenly replaced by very unfamiliar and uncomfortable attention. It was the second time he had found himself wishing he could talk to her and unable, once the opportunity presented itself, to actually think of anything to say.
He did, however, manage to look guilty and a little panicked.
His voice, when he spoke, was a little too dry. "....Hi."

It was just like nothing had ever happened. He was just nervous and weirded out to have heard what he shouldn’t and to be addressed so informally by her, like many of the servants would be. If she tried real hard, Katherine could almost believe that.
Although even if it was true for him, she was still inwardly freaking.
“I’m sorry, I had forgotten…” her voice cut off. That probably wouldn’t do to say that he had been so quiet that she had forgotten he was even there. “You weren’t supposed to hear that. I was just…mouthing off? It was very rude of me to speak about a guest in such a manner.”
And just why was she apologising to him? Wanda probably would have mouthed off to the guests face, then turned around and roasted at the servant as well.

He swallowed, trying to make his mouth not feel so dry. It would have been out of the question, but with a glance at the carafe Kurt now wished that he had brought another glass.
He looked up at Katherine with an apologetic grin. "You would be surprised", he said with a glimmer in his eye, "how much I am 'not supposed to hear'."
It was a trifling offense at most. Rude or not, she was nothing when compared with her sisters. Only not in the way that she probably thought. Though the word no longer held the meaning it once did, Katherine had a humanity that placed her so far above them.
They may have been superior by birth, but she.... She was superior by choice.

That brought a smile to Katherine’s lips.
“I suppose I would. You probably know more about what goes on around here than I do.”
She hadn’t really thought about it before, but she knew this had to be true. Nobody ever told her anything, even to the point of often stopping their conversations when she entered the room. But the servants, to many they were invisible; it didn’t matter what they heard, whether it be important or trivial, as they could do nothing with any of the information they heard. Oh, but what if they could?

Kurt turned a little red. "Your sister, Princess Lorna, thinks I cannot see as well...." He didn't elaborate, but he looked a little shocked as he rolled his eyes and thought about it.
In fact, he thought she simply didn't care. Or more likely that Lorna enjoyed taunting and tormenting the male servants. She was very beautiful, but her cruelty was her most prominent feature. Each of them knew it meant death or worse to give her any reason to be displeased.
"I am sorry", he said softly, but surprisingly without a trace of fear in his voice. "I should not speak so of your family."

Between the expression on his face and the way he trailed off, Katherine wasn’t quick enough to cover her mouth before a loud laugh escaped. Clapping a hand over her mouth to stifle it, it did nothing to hide the amusement in her eyes.
But man, oh man, what was she doing? She shouldn’t just be sitting here, talking and laughing with him like this. If anyone walked in, it would just not go over well, yet she just couldn’t seem to help it. She hadn’t been able to get her mind off him since the ball, and although she’d tried to avoid him until now, it felt better to not avoid him.
“I suppose not...” she drew the words out playfully, a wide grin on her lips, “but I won’t tell anyone. Besides, it’s not like you’re lying or anything. And there’s a lot worse you could say, I’m sure.”

Her laugh and her smile were infectious. It felt like the warmth of the sunrise as a reflection of the smile on Katherine's face found its way to his.
He supposed it was funny, now that he thought about it.
"A gentleman does not tell", was all he would offer in response. There was a gleam of mischief hidden somewhere in his shy gaze. "I should go", he said, but he didn't sound at all like he meant it.

Oh, that look in his eyes; Katherine felt herself blush a little.
“Oh, well, in that case I won’t waste my breath trying to get the gossip out of you,” she replied, not only happy to see him smile, but feeling somewhat... something that it was her that had caused him to smile. She wasn’t sure what that something was, but it was good.
Much better than the feeling she felt when he suggested leaving. She knew he was right, that he should go, but more than anything right now she didn’t want him to.
Ever.
“Yeah, I guess. But...” Her voice had grown quiet and her bright smile had dulled.
But what?
She didn’t even have an answer herself.
