The Wolverine (that was his name! Alex knew he'd remember it eventually) headed off with Rahne to find food. Alex headed off to a tall building nearby. He may not be able to climb it, but if he could, it would give him a better vantage point to find shelter than the ground.
Then again, he may be able to fly to the top, projecting his power beneath him as a sort of rocket exhaust. He'd never tried it before, but it may be worth it to experiment now.
Alex didn't quite understand the man's unwillingness to get a roof over his head and walls around him. It made sense to want to be protected from whatever dangers he thought the night held.
That was assuming he wasn't just being paranoid. So far, Alex had seen no indication that life, much less any dangerous life, existed here.

Now, this was something she understood! Rahne could have howled for the joy of it, that comprehension when before it had been all bewilderment and confusion. But they were hunting, so she kept her nose to the air and the ground, paws eating up the distance as she hunted alongside the Wolverine. Logan.
Not that they were hunting for anything impressive. But she could hear the tiny ba-dump, ba-dump getting closer.
Accelerating suddenly, Rahne leaped ahead of Logan and pounced on their prey. A skinny, weedy little jackrabbit. Her fangs caught it back of the neck and she shook it hard, putting an end to the uncanny screaming that a caught rabbit squealed until it died. Despite her hunger, she turned and trotted back to Logan. Laid it at his feet, like a good hunting dog and looked up with her green eyes, something still human lurking in the back of them. The need for approval the same in the wolf as it was in the girl.

Alex found himself finally ascending to the roof of the building. No mysterious, haunted dangers for him. He placed his hand over his eyes to shade them from the old sun above so that he could see. From this vantage point, he could see a hospital, which would probably work best as lodging, assuming they weren't in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. It would have kitchens, beds, but most importantly, a generator. Then, if they could find some gasoline, they could have electricity.
It was a lot of "ifs", though. He spotted what looked like a college campus. Even more ifs. From here, he ought to be able to see lots of things that should function as shelter, but he couldn't find a lot. Most of the buildings were old, dilapidated, and probably wouldn't have a whole lot of resources available.
And then he found something that piqued his interest. It was definitely old, but in the case of this structure that was probably a good thing. And given its size, it may have kitchens, too. But most importantly, it would likely have candles. And candles were more useful than light bulbs. They tended to last longer, too, at least from a "post-apocalyptic spoils" standpoint.
He looked around for Rahne, but couldn't find her. Same with Logan. He would just have to wait at the bottom of the building for them. He just hoped he could get them to the church on time.
"Oh, that was just terrible."
