Henry entered the darkness of the medlab silently, as one so accustomed to a space that he could navigate with his eyes closed. He left most of the lights off, settling instead for the glow from the equipment and the soft rays of light from the single bedside lamp. He checked the monitors to see if there were any changes and began changing the fluids that ran into the IV.
For several minutes he busied himself changing the bedding and clothing, emptying fluids and generally attending to the care of his patient. He then stood for several moments and solemnly watched as the figure before him did nothing more than breathe. Silently, he wiped a tear from his own eye.
He took a pencil and a tablet from the counter and sat in the chair next to the Professor's bed.
"I'm sorry to be the one who has to tell you this", he said after a while, "but Melana didn't choose Adam after all. She went for the pretty boy waiter that they brought in after the show was under way. What this proved about the average guy getting the girl I shudder to think, but Adam showed a lot of class. I told you it would work out that way, so that's a point for me." He made a mark on the paper.
"The good news is", he continued, "that Trista actually married Ryan so you get the point for that one." He made another mark.
"But it turns out they kicked Rupert off the island days ago and with all the excitement I forgot to mention it before now. So that puts me in the lead." He tallied another point and put the tablet aside.
"Now, where were we?", he said - retrieving a large book from where it sat next to the lamp. "Oh, yes...Smeagol was leading Frodo and Sam across the Dead Marshes.... You remember."
And with that, he read aloud for many hours into the night.
