Christine rubbed the back of her neck as she stepped off the bus. Something pulled her away from the Avenger Mansion - something drew her to this part of New York. She had changed out of her Avenger lounge wear and slipped into something fairly scandalous - a bikini top that exposed her entire back and her finest piece of art (the large Phoenix tattoo), a pair of low riding jeans and a pair of deep black boots.
She tapped a foot impatiently as she waited for the light to change so she could cross the street. She was getting impatient and was sorely tempted to use her weak telekinesis to change the light. "C'mon," she muttered, continuing to tap her foot.
"*Finally*," she sighed, crossing the street. Something was drawing her to go this way - to head towards the Xavier mansion. She pulled the patch out of her pocket and stared at the cryptic X medallion that usually graced her uniform. "Just what is it about this X?"

This was nuts, clearly nuts. Here she was, away from the sanity/insanity of Avenger HQ, and for what? Trying to find out the history of the X she wore on her uniform? Yep. Definitely nuts. Not one of her finer judgment calls but well, she had gotten this far. Too late to back down, too late to turn around and head back to Avenger HQ. At least Iron Man hadn't sent Spidey to track her down, Gawd, that would have been embarrassing. Seriously - having to be dragged home like a little kid. Not her idea of a fun time. She sighed and shook her head. "Well, I got this far. No sense in not trying to find out the truth about you," she said quietly to the medallion in her hand. She took a small cleansing breath and slipped the medallion back into her jeans' pocket. Hopefully, the answers to the questions that haunted her - like why was there an X on her uniform? Why was there a ton of phoenix related stuff haunting her (like the tattoo and the sheer number of tops or jeans that had the phoenix featured on them somehow)? - would be found there. And hopefully... this wasn't going to be a huge mistake of epic proportions. OOC edit: if anyone would like to join in, go ahead. I'm not fussy

'Great,' she thought, glancing about. 'First time in this part of the city and I'm completely frellin' lost. Brilliant, Christine. You're sure living up to that code name Iron Man gave you.' Sighing quietly, she walked over to the nearest newspaper stand and bought a map. "If only it had a "you are here" sticker," she murmured to herself. "Or could show me the way to get there."
She folded it up and stuck it into her back pocket. "Well, onwards and upwards," she muttered, and continued down the path. "Hopefully, I'll be able to find this place. Of course, what do I do when I get there," she asked herself, laughing quietly. "Besides try to figure out what this X stands for. And why the deuce I would have it in the first place."
She fished it out of her pocket and stared at it, dragging a finger against the black X. "You're a mystery, my friend," she murmured. All the answers to all her questions were in that X, she knew it. Just trying to get the questions answered might actually pose the problem. "Hopefully, this Xavier can answer them. Otherwise, well, it'd be back to square one and I don't want to go back to square one. I hate not knowing my past."
OOC edit2: Chris got a revamp over on Uevolved and part of it came with a loss of memories. She has no idea she was an X-Men or anything along those lines. All she knows is that she's a mutant and that she had a brother who was also a mutant and that there's an X and a Phoenix that were a part of her somehow, just how, she doesn't know.

She made her way over to a bench and sat down for a moment, trying to pull her thoughts together as she was struck by a particularly violent migraine - the results of being far too strict with her shields, having used too much psychic power to keep them up. Her shields were crumbling, lying in pieces on the floor of her mind. "Control, control," she whispered the mantra that those teachers were trying to get her to remember. "Control, control." A long stretch of time passed and she finally drooped, drained but mentally still intact.
She leaned back, her eyes closing as she struggled to find the strength to stand and continue her quest to get the place that held the answers to her questions. "Why can't I remember?" she whispered to herself. "Why does this X haunt me? And the marking on my back? I know it's a phoenix but why does it feel familiar? Why can't I remember anything from before my twenty third birthday?" She fished the medallion out again and stared at it.
"I have to find out. I *have* to. I need to know who I am, who Christine MacTaggert is. And why do I have the whisps of memories of names and faces that I've never met?" she asked the X, knowing it wouldn't give her the answers she desperately craved.

She rose from the bench and pocketed the medallion. A faint rippling and the scandalous top reformed itself to a long sleeved blouse. Somehow, she had a feeling the top she had on before wouldn't go over too well if the professor was anything like the upper crust male she had heard about. She'd mask that part of her, until she knew it was safe for her to reveal it.
Her left hand went to her left temple and she massaged the dull ache. Thankfully, she remembered that she had her iPod with her and she popped in the earbuds. Hopefully, the music would get her to focus and stop thinking about the "X". She continued to wander, unaware that her use of her power tripped some alarm at the mansion, alerting whoever was there that a "new mutant" had emerged.
"This is me for forever One of the lost ones The one without a name Without an honest heart as compass
This is me for forever One without a name These lines the last endeavor To find the missing lifeline
Oh how I wish For soothing rain All I wish is to dream again My loving heart Lost in the dark For hope I'd give my everything
My flower, withered between The pages 2 and 3 The once and forever bloom gone with my sins
Walk the dark path Sleep with angels Call the past for help Touch me with your love And reveal to me my true name
Oh how I wish For soothing rain All I wish is to dream again My loving heart Lost in the dark For hope I'd give my everything Oh how I wish For soothing rain Oh how I wish to dream again Once and for all And all for once Nemo my name forevermore
Nemo sailing home Nemo letting go
Oh how I wish For soothing rain All I wish is to dream again My loving heart Lost in the dark For hope I'd give my everything Oh how I wish For soothing rain Oh how I wish to dream again Once and for all And all for once Nemo my name forevermore
My name forevermore," she sang along with the female vocalist. "Oh yeah, this is so my song," she murmured, grateful she had set it for repeat

She removed the earbuds and put the iPod on pause. She could see the mansion, just over that hill. It was far bigger then she imagined. She gulped quietly. Oh, yes, now she was getting cold feet. Surprise, surprise. With the goal so close, she was starting to become afraid. Fear would never get the answers she craved so she had to buck up and just go. If only she could convince herself of that.
"Okay," she breathed. "Almost there. Just down the road, over that hill... And hopefully... I'll know."

Yep, Iron Man was going to skin her alive if he found out that she had gone to talk to Xavier after he had been slightly crystal clear that it would be better for her to be a hero then a vigilante - but this was her life and she needed to know the truth. If the good professor knew the truth about her clouded past, then she'd talk. She was still going to be an Avenger but she needed to find out who she was, and if that person had been an X-Man... It wouldn't hurt to have ties to the team - it would be good to have a safe haven when things got way past weird at Avenger HQ. Her legs gave out from under her as another migraine struck and she crumpled into a seated position. She closed her eyes tightly and she struggled to get her thoughts centered. Thousands of thoughts swarmed into the now vulnerable telepath's head as her shields were in broken pieces on the floor of her mind. Maybe I should save up to get that carWhy won't Mommy let me have that candy bar! I want it!If I lost a few pounds, maybe he'll come back. Just a few Mommy? Where are you? I want my mommy!Daddy, can we get that puppy? 'Out of my head, everyone get out of my head!' Christine mentally screamed, clasping her hands over her ears, hoping that by covering her ears she wouldn't be forced to hear the thoughts of the people who passed by her. She whimpered as she struggled to get her shields to go back up. 'Someone... help... I can't do this,' she whispered weakly, hoping beyond hope that another telepath would pick up on her plea and help her, show her how to put up better shields.
