Madelyne stood at the edge of the dock. She threw a stone and watched it skip across the mirror like surface of the lake and then sink beneath the watery depth. She threw another, then another and another each one skipping a farther and farther. She liked the patterns the rippling water made as the stones skipped across them and then how the water once again became still as if nothing happened.
She thought her life was like that. So much had happen to her, so many ripples have been made but still she seemed outwardly to be the same person. Deep down she knew that was illusion, it was a big lie. Everything may appear the same on the surface but deep down hidden in the murky depth of it all there was a change making where things could never be the same.
She was not the same person the left Alaska, but it is to be expected. Finding out she wasn’t real, that she was nothing but clone changed everything for her. She mourned for the person she was and was bit scared of what she was and what she may become.
She moves to pitch another stone but found her hands empty. She sighed as she stared at her hands moment and then dusted the dirt off on her jeans. For the first time she felt the bitter autumn wind. She wrapped her arms around her chest and rubbing her upper arms for warmth.
Despite how the cold seem to cut right through her, Maddie liked it. Least she could feel the cold, she could feel something, and showing despite being what she was she was alive that she wasn’t some robot or doll.
Another sigh filled the redheaded clone. She knew it wasn’t the smart thing to do by staying here. She should stay away from her and the X-Men. What she was and what she was made to do made her a danger to everyone here. But she didn’t know where else she could go.

It was amazing how one action could clear up weeks of confusion and uncertainty. The mission to help Kyle had been more help to Storm than she could ever express. Despite current politics, she could still make a difference, and that meant everything. Any doubt she had had regarding who she was and where she belonged had vanished, but now it was time to make amends to those she had pushed away.
Although she had been to see Jean during her recovery, the distance between them was unmistakeable, and there was no doubt as to why. In the world Storm remembered, Logan had never even been a possibility; his heart had always belonged to Jean. Things were different here, now, and it was about time that they cleared the air. Of all the things Ororo missed of her old life, her best friend ranked above all.
Even from high above the world, Jean’s telltale red hair was unmistakeable. The wind picking up around the water, it slowly centered and diminished as Storm descended to the ground.
“I’m glad to see you up and about,” she greeted, smiling at the redhead.

Another reason she shouldn’t stay here, her being here just confused everyone. It was to complicated to explain that she wasn’t her and those who knew what she was always seem to look at her differently, like they expect her to snap and rip off their face. Madelyne didn’t pick up her head.
“I am not her.” She said simply her eyes not leaving the water watching as the wind cause waves to form. “I know I look like her but I am not.”
Maddie shrugged slightly as if it didn’t matter. “It’s no big deal.” She chuckle slightly as if she just figured out a joke she didn’t quite understand. “People been making that mistake a lot lately.”
She rubbed her eyes on the back of her hand and then took her hair behind her ear. She did her best to pull herself together and not appear as how she felt scattered like leaves on the wind. The redhead plastered a smile on her face and finally looked to Ororo.
“I am Madelyne.” Mentally she added ‘not Jean’, she didn’t speak that out loud for she knew it made her sound bitter.
She had no bitterness towards Jean for she didn’t know her. There was no bitterness there just a bit of fear. Maddie feared Jean because she feared she would never be able to compare to her and that she was just a pale copy.

Ororo had heard the story behind Madelyne’s existence, but to actually see her was something she could not have prepared for. The resemblance was uncanny! Her voice... she even sounded like Jean. It was deeply unsettling.
“Even so, I am very sorry for making the same mistake. I hope you’ll forgive me for my rudeness as well. I did not mean to stare,” she replied, tearing her eyes away for a moment and offering an apologetic smile. “It’s very nice to meet you, Madelyne. I am Ororo Munroe.”
Holding out her hand to Madelyne, Ororo met her eyes. It was in them that the distinction between her and Jean was made obvious.

Madelyne lowered her eyes and stood up straight. She felt like a show dog at a dog and pony show, being examined and searched over for some flaw. She was worried she had some flaw she couldn’t see but the oblivious to everyone else that marked her as a clone. She managed to keep her smile in place.
“It’s nothing to be sorry over. Please to meet you, Ororo.” She said softly as she took Ororo’s hand, for the first time she actual looked at the other woman before her.
Maddie was a bit jealous at the sight of Ororo. Her flawless chocolate skin and white hair made her strikingly beautiful. She knew from one look the Ororo was a unique beauty and that were probably no one on earth that had quite her looks, that was something she could never say that about her.
Her eyes dropped to her feet when she realized she was staring. As she stared at her feet she absently wondered where did she left her shoes for she was in her socking feet. “Now I have to apologize for staring.”
She looked up at Ororo, again. She curious about the other woman and wanted to learn more about her, it was this overly curious nature that had the Summers’ worried about her when she decide to leave the airfield and come to New York. “What brings you out here?” She paused realizing it might seem rude for her to ask, since this was Ororo’s home and she was the real trespasser here. “If you don’t mind me asking that is…”

Although she was unsure why, it seemed to Ororo that Madelyne was as curious about her as Ororo was of the genetic clone, not that being stared at was out of the ordinary. Her white hair and blue eyes were unusual for someone of her age and color, so lingering looks were something she had quickly grown accustomed to at a young age.
“Please, do not apologize. My recent makeover seems to have earned me many stares as of late,” Ororo said with a smile as she ran one hand back over her mohawk. As happy as she was with her newfound identity and self confidence, it was unsettling how many of the students now found her intimidating. Perhaps they had always found her that way, but it was now only too apparent.
“Not at all,” she reassured. “I often find that when the world feels like it is closing in on me, the only way I can break free again is to fly. It allows me to clear my head, something I have needed to do a lot lately. There is no other feeling like it.”

Maddie blushed slightly seeing her staring had been caught. “You are beautiful and unique.” She said with a shrug knowing being what she was unique would never be linked to her. “You should be proud of the stares for they just confirm how breath taking you are.”
The redhead nodded and looked up at the sky as Ororo brought up flying. She nodded and smiled slightly. “I know the feeling when everything just seems to be caving in…” She sighed softly. “Flying is very liberating.”
Her eyes searched the sky as if looking for something of important. “I use to be a pilot. I lived to fly.” She said in wistful tone as remembering something that was years ago and not just a few months ago.
Maddie frowned slightly remembering the few times she flew under her own power, it was only when she was in a dark place that she seem to have full access to her power. The darkness she felt when she used her powers made her afraid of what she was capable of and if those dark thoughts that came with them is the real her. She rubbed her shoulders again knowing the chill she felt now was not because of the wind.
“Though now that I can fly on my own it’s a bit unsettling.” She said softly and looked to Ororo again.

“Thank you,” Ororo accepted the compliments graciously. Despite the tinge of pink in her cheeks, the tone Madelyne used was more like she was stating fact than giving praise and it didn’t make Ororo uncomfortable at all. On the contrary, she appreciated the sentiment.
When Madelyne got lost in her thoughts, Storm took the moment to mull things over. What must it truly be like? She had recently suffered her own identity crisis, but the image she was fighting was of herself, just a different version. Madelyne, on the other hand, had a whole other person to contend with. She had been created to be someone else. Her face, her voice and her powers were all identical to Jean Grey. She was like an image in a mirror come to life.
But even if she nor anyone else couldn’t see them, the differences were there. It was what was inside that truly drew the line. She had lived her own life before learning of her situation. She had been Madelyne Pryor. She had perhaps been a daughter, a sister, a mother, a lover, a friend... these were the things that were imbedded in her heart and should not be given up so easily.
“Our methods of flying are different, but I personally prefer to fly of my own accord than in the belly of a metal beast,” Ororo said, with a hint of a teasing smile. It soon fell away, though, giving way to genuine interest. “But I’m a decent pilot as well. Did you actually fly commercial airplanes or were your skills used more for private joyriding?”

“But getting that metal beast to respond the right way is a thrill on till itself.” Maddie quipped back at Ororo as a smile appeared on her face. “It’s a very hard skill to master get those metal beasts to dance on the wind.”
“I worked as a bush pilot up in Alaska for the Summers’ Airfield till a month ago. I flew people and cargo back and forth. No jets or anything but I loved it and sometimes I wonder why I left it behind to come here.” Her smiled disappeared and she just shrugged still trying to figure out if she was doing things because it’s her own will or if she was being guide by the strings of some dark puppet master. “I guess I could chalk it up to destiny.”
Realizing she probably shouldn’t probably be so revealing to someone she didn’t know and began to search for a change of topic. Tilting her head to the side. “So, you are a teacher here? Or what?” She shrugged slightly blushing slightly embarrass that she didn‘t know much about the place she was currently was staying. “I am still in the dark what exactly goes on here besides the whole school thing.”

It was nice to see Madelyne smile. There seemed to be an air of sadness around her, like she walked around with a dark cloud over her heart. How awful must it be to learn that your entire life was a lie? That everything you thought you were was meant for someone else? It had to be terrible.
“A strong belief in destiny can shape your life, but so can a strong belief in shaping it yourself,” Ororo replied, softly. But as uncomfortable as Madelyne seemed with this conversation, Ororo let the topic slide.
“Yes, I am an instructor here, but I was also once a student, although not in the traditional sense,” she said, her eyes roaming towards the school in question. “This place is much more than a school where young mutants can learn the subjects every child must. It is also a place where they train to control the gifts they were given. They learn both control over their powers and over themselves. Once in control, they can wield them at will, but they must learn when it is appropriate to do so. Also, they must learn about teamwork and how to protect not only civilians, but their teammates as well.”

Madelyne smirked slight at Ororo’s first comment, thinking that she liked this woman. She knew what she was yet she was still kind to her and have yet to treat her like some freak of nature. At this point in time it took very little to earn her unwavering friendship Maddie thought with a shake of her head. Treat her like a person and you had a life long friend.
Maybe in another life or another time they could be friends but now she didn’t think it was possible. Despite her best effort most everyone here thought she was something evil and was here to replace their beloved Jean. Maddie truthfully didn’t want to be Jean and wanted to be her own person though being what she wasn’t so sure she could be anything else.
She looked down at her feet and nod. “You do a great service here, you are shaping the future. It makes me wish I could be of use but I can barely control myself.” She shrugged and offered the other woman a lopsided smile.
“And why would anyone need…” She looked up at the sky. “A pilot when you have people who can fly.”
Maddie was going to say ‘why would anyone need her around when they got the real thing?’ but she had second thoughts about it. She really didn’t really want to hang out all her hang ups for someone she just met to see, no matter how much she liked them.
