Thou, the Guthrie were very loving and nurturing parents Mel felt over looked next to her nine siblings. Grow up one of ten kids was difficult but for the most part she was happy.
Shortly after she started school her father died in a coal mining accident. She doesn’t remember a lot about her father and wish she knew more. All she remembered about the time right after his death that there was no laughter in the house anymore, that Sam wasn’t going to school anymore but was working in the mines and that she always felt underfoot. Melody remembered slowly momma began to laugh again and so did everyone else.
Things went well for the Guthrie for a while. They were poor and had to live day-by-day, but Melody and her brothers and sisters never went out food or clothes, momma and Sam made sure of that. Then another dark day hit them. While Sam was working in the mine there was another cave in. Melody was afraid that the laughter was once again leave the house as momma had already began crying and praying for Sam, just like she did daddy the night of that cave in. But by some miracle Sam survived and even managed to save the other miners by having his mutant powers activate during the cave in. This led up to Melody’s and the rest of the Guthrie’s first meeting with Xavier and his New Mutant squad. Xavier offered Sam a place at his school. After some coaxing and an offer of money to help momma keep the farm, Sam went with him.
Melody missed her brother and was annoyed with both Josh and Paige when they seem to try to take his place as oldest and boss everyone around. But never wanting to start a fight Mel kept her annoyance to herself.
Life was normal again and for the most part Melody was happy. Melody was one the few siblings that didn’t really mind the taunt of ‘mutie’ that were made regularly by the Cabots boys and some of Cumberland’s more small minded town folk. Of course she was the happiest with Sam and friends would come home for a visit.
Then during the fall when Melody had just turned ten she came upon Paige ‘ripping off her own face’. Melody quickly got their mother fearing something horrible happened to her oldest sister. Paige quickly inform them when they ran out to help her that Mel had ‘freaked’ out over nothing and that ripping away her skin was just her mutant power. Melody was mad at Paige for a long time for this, for scaring her and dismissing her as if she were stupid.
Shortly, there after Joelle began to fear her to mutant siblings and resent them for all the abuse she got from her classmate in school. She eventual joined Humanity’s Last Stand an anti-mutant cult. Melody found out her sister secret and try to warn Paige but her sister once again dismissed her believing she was telling stories to get attention. Paige found out the hard way Melody wasn’t lying after when the cult capture her and Sam (while he visiting) and nearly got them beaten to death. Joelle saw the error of her ways rather quickly and stole Sam comlink giving it to Melody so she could call the X-Men for help.
Sam and Paige were saved and everything went back to normal again. The next year, Paige was recruited to Xavier’s new team of teenage mutant Generation X and few months later Elizabeth powers showed up and she also left the farm for Xavier. Shortly afterwards news of Sam disappearing during a mission as an X-Man in the Savage Land and that he thought to be dead got back to the Guthries. Melody felt lost and abandon by her siblings. The shy girl became even more withdrawn and quiet.
The next couple of years were rather sullen for Melody as she watched her siblings wondering who will abandon them next. She was the first of the siblings to see the wings Joshua hid from everyone and to catch Jeb practicing with his powers. She kept the knowledge to herself not wanting Xavier’s to steal another one of her siblings.
Then Jeb attempt to scare the Cabots boys with his powers caused him to be shot and then X-Men once again brought the X-Men to the door. Paige (now an X-Men) and her then boyfriend (the much older) Warren came to the farmhouse saving Jeb by using Warren’s blood to heal him. Shortly there after the Cabots boys and their father came up to the house with guns ready for a fight. After Paige and Warren disarmed the men they left swearing vengeance on the Guthries and their mutie friends.
In the end, the Cabots violence claimed a life, but is were not a Guthrie but one of their own, Julia Cabots, Joshua Guthrie first love. After Julia's death Jay attempted to kill himself, but was unsuccessful due to his healing factor. Paige and Warren were getting ready to take Joshua and Jeb back to the institute believing that they both could better cope with their powers. Melody in moment of despair over losing more siblings to Xavier climbed on top of the barn and jumped. Instead of falling to her doom the girl flew, much to her family surprise she flew. Mel ended up going with brothers to the Xavier’s. No one realizing that she jumped without knowing she could fly and Melody kept the small fact to herself.
At Xavier’s Melody began to start to come out of her shell and peek out from her siblings. The girl began to have a small group of friends at Xavier and got good grades. She was truly happy.
Then she went to sleep on her sixteen birthday and when she woke up everything was different. She woke up in her bed in Cumberland. Melody was still Melody but everything else was different.
She was now was the same age as her older brother Josh and everything she remembered never happen. What shocked Mel the most was the news of her sister Paige’s death. Melody hated having to write home. She never knew what to write but knew she had to send a letter soon or her mother would start calling. Besides Lucinda Guthrie has enough on her plate with out having to worry about her.
The dark hair girl tapped her pencil against desk and stared out the window as she sat in the library thinking she would rather be flying. Her mind was already editing things out even before her pencil touched the paper. She knew she couldn’t talk about any of the dangerous things that went on at the school or mention that she missed home, either would get her fretting up a storm and either has her calling for Mel to return home or packing up the younger kids for a visits. Mel was trying to avoid both results.
She bit her lip and bowed her head as she began to write: ‘Dear Mama, I am doing fine. Give everyone a hug and kiss for me. Love, Melody.’
Melody frowned as looking over what she wrote knowing that wasn’t going to cut it. She whimpered then smacked her head against the desk giving up. “It aint suppose to be this hard!” She protested out loud.
