Given Name: Reyna Baird
Codename: None as of yet
Age: 23
Detailed Description of Powers: Reyna can communicate with animals through a mental link. Generally, the link must be started with physical contact unless it is an animal that shares a strong bond with her. The strongest application of her powers allows her to go into a trance-like state and fully enter the animal’s mind and remain linked without physical contact. While in a trance, all of her senses are tied to the animal she is linked with. What it sees, hears, feels, and smells are what she experiences. She becomes completely unaware of anything around her body and is extremely vulnerable. While the link can persist through walls, it cannot stretch over any great distance. Her current control only allows the link to stretch the length of a football field before it breaks and she is forcibly sent back to her own mind. If she breaks the link herself, she suffers no ill effects but a forcible breaking (due to trauma to her body such as being hit hard, going too far from her body, or the animal itself pushing her out) will give her a nasty headache that will prevent her from resuming the trance for some time.
Her powers only affect animals. She cannot use them on humans or mutants even if they take an animal form. Mammals generally get the best results, fish are generally unaffected and insects are not affected at all by her powers. She cannot outright control animals even in a trance. She may only speak to them and hope that they obey. As such she prefers to communicate with domestic and tamed animals as she has the best luck with getting them to comply.
Originally from: Missouri
Known Family: Mother, Father (deceased), no siblings
Physical Description: Reyna is around 5’5” with a medium build. She is of a healthy weight with some muscle tone. She has black hair and a fair complexion with brown eyes. She tends to wear t-shirts with random sayings on them, jeans, and cloth sneakers with a skull pattern printed on them. On occasion she also wears a leather trench coat.
Personality: Reyna is generally friendly and easygoing, although she tends to be a bit spacey when she has an animal around to talk to. She dislikes fighting and avoids it when she can. She is often amused by the fact that people who know of her powers tend to assume she’s vegan or at least vegetarian.
Other: Has a pet raven named Kuro. Her favorite color is light blue and her favorite food is chicken. She has her own car, an older blue Chevy Malibu that’s seen better days.
Bio: Reyna grew up surrounded by farmland in the backwoods of Missouri. Generally sheltered, she was left to do her own thing most of the time while her parents worked. Her mother handled filing and records for the town hall and her father was a trucker for the local quarry. Her father also tended to be a drunk and kept himself distant from his daughter. When Reyna was in middle school he crashed his truck while driving home extremely drunk from the local sports bar. Having never been particularly close to her father, it didn’t affect her as much as she thought it should have. Most of her other relatives lived too far away to carry on much more than token contact, so she considers her only true family to be her mother.
Her powers manifested while she was in high school. They developed slowly, at first only mild urges and feelings then later coherent thoughts. She practiced on the local barn-cats and kept her powers as hidden as she could. Once she learned how to trance, however, her mother caught on. Though her mother accepted that her daughter was a mutant easily enough, the rest of their town wasn’t nearly as friendly to the idea and she still had to be careful not to let her secret slip.
After graduating high school, Reyna decided to skip out on the chance for college and instead worked for the local farmers. While working one day she found a fledgling raven that a cat had caught. It was hurt, though not too badly, but unable to fly since the cat had chewed on a few of the more important flight feathers. She calmed it with her powers, hid it in her jacket, and feigned ‘feminine issues’ to get the farmer to let her go home early. She named the raven Kuro (Japanese for “black”) and nursed him back to health. Being a very intelligent species of bird, Kuro accepted Reyna’s powers easily and soon became a pet, although he lived in nest-box on the porch. Despite Reyna’s claims of being able to house-train the wild bird, her mother refused to let Kuro come in.
Though she was careful about hiding her powers, some of the townsfolk had begun to notice her way with animals. She could pet dogs that were normally aggressive to all but their owners and the raven that followed her though town was hard to miss. Most of the people were indifferent about the small mutant population, however there were a growing number of anti-mutant posters going up around town and reports of violence against suspected mutants was growing.
To protect her mother from any backlash, Reyna decided to leave home, packing a few essentials into her car and convincing Kuro to travel with her in a large cat-carrier. She followed rumors and stories of groups of mutants, living off of a sizable savings she’d gathered up from working at the various farms.
And in the Interview:
Why did you choose our site?: I’ve been gone far too long…. I missed y’all!
What about this character do you like?: Her powers are less random than Taela’s were. I am hoping she will fit in a bit better.
Have you ever RPed before? Where?: (If you wish, you can include a link to other RPGs here) Here, ages ago. I also played around in a Naruto-based RP group that ran through Livejournal (I played Sakura, Temari, and two OCs who were bitter enemies. Fun times!) although it is now dead. Now I get my RP fix from playing on World of Warcraft’s Roleplay servers (Cenarion Circle, in case anyone else plays WoW).
Please write a sample post for the character you want below: ((I am out of shape rp-wise. Sorry if it’s a bit stiff-sounding.))
Reyna stretched as she waited for the gas pump to finish filing up her tank. Glancing around, she noticed only a few other drivers but none seemed to give anything more than a passing interest in her. She opened the passenger side door and peered into a cat-carrier buckled into the seat. Her raven, Kuro, cawed at her. Poking a few fingers through the wires, she wiggled them as though tempting a cat to play. Kuro took the hint and put his side to the door so that Reyna could pet him and talk a bit.
Hungry. Fly soon? He asked, well-accustomed to the mental link.
You can fly this evening. Reyna responded. I’ll get you some food.
Hearing the pump click off, she closed up her tank and headed inside. Thankfully, the raven was used to eating whatever she was eating, and wouldn’t be picky. She grabbed some chicken nuggets, a hot dog, and some mozzarella sticks from the gas station’s ‘ready-to-go’ selection. It wasn’t the healthiest, but it would do.
