And if I have prophecy and know all mysteries and all knowledge,
and if I have all faith so as to remove mountains,
but have not love, I am nothing.
For now we see through a mirror, darkly...
excerpted from translations of 1 Corinthians 13
What if you could have everything you ever wanted?
Your opinion is commandment.
Your whim is law.
Magneto has long been emperor of all he surveys. His rule and decree has reduced humankind to a feared and hated subculture now enslaved by their superiors. Yes, there is resistance, but it diminishes by the day. Intermingling means death. Soon, all but the weakness of homo sapiens will be only a memory.
He has everything he fought for.
None of it matters.
For though it is something Magneto would find unthinkable to ever admit - even to himself - his crusade has had as much to do with personal matters - with burying the pain of being alone - as it did with any altruistic goals of preserving his race. He has endured their prejudice, their murderous conquest, their hate and their wrath, he has brought down their civilizations around them and driven them back into dark holes like the cockroaches they are.
He has become everything they feared he might be.
None of it has staunched the pain of losing his parents. None of it quieted the memory of the woman who fled from him in fear, who took with her his heart...his humanity...and his unborn children.
What, he wonders, will he have worth living for when at last the fight is over?
and if I have all faith so as to remove mountains,
but have not love, I am nothing.
For now we see through a mirror, darkly...
