Perhaps she lived a hollow life, but it was not a thing for her to mind. She had no past, only the present and future. But her life was not purposeless. Quite the contrary, she had one prominent purpose, and that was her whole life. She lived to fulfil it, and in doing so, fulfill herself.
A small figure crept silently along the castle grounds, dark hair and clothing blending her into the shadows that night brought with it. The night was beautifully still and quiet, and she knew she was alone. There was only the sound of crickets, and a slight ruffling of leaves in the almost imperceptible breeze. She was aware of it, though. She was aware of everything around her, senses and body tuned, ready to react to anything. The breeze carried the scents to her, and they were stale. Men, women, even children...she could have picked out any one of them and known a startling amount about the person that went with it. However, she was uninterested in all but one. She inhaled deeply, taking in the scent. His scent.
Instictively, her body stilled as a precaution. However, like the rest, this scent was stale. He hadn't been by this spot for some time. She was ready, though, to smell it again, fresh. She was downwind and would know he was there long before he'd know of her.
Satisfied that she was on the trail and able to act freely, she continued along her intended path. Though she was alone, she maintained a professional approach and acted with the same stealth and silence as if she was under supervision. She had no place in her life for carelessness. Also, she was not so foolish as to believe she wasn't under supervision. This was the King's castle. She'd encountered a great deal of security thus far, but had been able to pass it. There was certainly more, and living threats weren't her only concern. Science, as well as power guarded the castle and its inhabitants.
The shadowy figure kept herself off all radar. She was ever vigilant, prowling the castle grounds. In time, she would make her move, but for the moment, she simply familiarized herself with her environment. What she sought was inside the looming building at the center. She would face him in time, but not until she was ready.
Pausing, she stared at the castle. Despite the late hour, a few windows glittered alight against the dark night sky. He was there. She was so close...
The wind shifted suddenly, gathering enough intensity to move the leafy branches above her. Moonlight broke through the cover and illuminated a face staring longingly at the castle. The face was serious, yet blank, and looked much too old for the young girl to which it belong.
The well-trained stalker that had intruded unnoticed onto the King's grounds was a girl no older than sixteen.
