I debated on whether or not to bother posting a response. It has been years since anyone had posted anything of significance, and if nobody responds, newcomers would likely get the hint and move on. While I can certainly appreciate a fellow Fallout fan, I decided to post this in the event any other Lone Wanderers stop by and decide to play in the Wasteland.
As much as it pains me to say it, Xevolved is no more. It's nobody's fault, really. Time goes on, we all have real lives and responsibilities, and sometimes difficult choices must be made as to how we spend our time. We had a good run. We had some great and memorable writers. Others not so much, but everyone contributed in some way, and even the bad ones are remembered. Some of the writing was pretty simple. Some of it I'd stack up to anything that Marvel has printed. We were that good. Don't take my word for it; read for yourself. It's all here.
"Whatever!" goes the cry. "This is just another fanfic site. If you're so good, why aren't you writing for Marvel?"
A fair question. I think the answer is we didn't write because we were paid to. We wrote because we love the X-Universe, we love the characters, and the versions that evolved here are uniquely ours. Yes, these characters were created in some high-rise in New York, just like all the others. But they went their own direction here. They had unique qualities and relationships. A lot of them don't remotely resemble canon, but that's kind of the point. We wrote these characters and put our own particular spins on them because we love them. We didn't have editorial oversight, we didn't have fifty years of canon to adhere to. We picked a character we loved and started writing. All of us had characters we loved, and we channeled that into our writing. Together we crafted a unique universe that I have never seen duplicated. I've tried writing for some other sites, and while it's still fun, it just isn't the same. We had a great mix of contributors, we all fed off of each other's ideas, we respected each other's abilities, and, in time, came to genuinely care for each other. There are people who contributed on this site that, despite never meeting, I call my friend. And I think that's what it all boils down to. Love.
Like all good things, we wish it could last forever. But all good things must end.
I'm glad you found the place, and thought enough of it to try and find a pulse. For myself, I still stop by from time to time. I never get tired of these stories and characters, and it's like visiting old friends. Feel free to look about, and enjoy the scenery. But please tread carefully. This is sacred ground, and there are ghosts here.
