Lesson #2: Courtesy
Everybody likes to be respected, right? Well, respect is a two-way street. Show respect, and you will earn respect. It does NOT work the other way around.
A good way to show respect in an online RPG is to ask permission to join an existing thread. If you come along a thread already in progress that you have an idea how to include your character, have the courtesy to PM the players already in the thread. Explain your idea and ask permission to join. We try to steer away from "Private" threads here, but don't be offended if the players say they'd rather keep this thread to themselves. A lot of times, some players have plotted beforehand, and are letting their plots unfold in their threads, and are a great deal of fun to read once they finish. A random character jumping in can derail the whole thing, and is very aggravating to those already in the thread. You are more than free to begin your own thread, and send a PM to those who you would like to join you.
If you are accepted into an existing thread, remember to allow everyone in the thread a chance to reply. A lot of people on the site can't post every single day for one reason or another, and I can't begin to tell you how frustrating it is to come back to a thread a day or two later and find myself hopelessly left behind. If you were shown the courtesy to join a thread, show the courtesy to allow everyone to participate.
