Tom has always been the black sheep of the Cassidys. He lost the family fortune and estate to his cousing, Sean, in a bet, and has thus had an intense rivalry with him, which turned to deep hatred. Both he and Sean were in love with the same woman, a non-mutant called Maeve. However, in a constant theme of Tom's life, she chose Sean over the thusly-devastated Tom. However, in a tragic series of events, ending in Maeve's death as a result of an IRA bombing when Sean was out of the country, Tom was left as the guardian for Sean and Maeves daughter, Theresa (Syrin). With no way to contact her father, Tom took her under his wing. When Sean returned, he injured Tom by throwing him into a chasm (for not protecting Maeve sufficiently), and in a bitter rage, Tom neglected to tell his cousin that Theresa had survived the bombing. Ergo, Tom was left as the 'father' of the young girl. After meeting his one and only friend, Juggernaught, in prison, Tom began a life of high crime, with Theresa (who was now using the name Syrin) and Juggernaught in tow. However, after a brawl with several X-Men, Tom was captured for a short while. In this time, he gave up custody of Theresa to her father. Once again, Tom had lost someone he loved to Sean. After his escape from the X-Men's clutches, he was shot by Cable, and was taken to france, where doctors grafted plant matter to his body, transforming his powers from thermokinetic to telekinetic in basis. However, in true Tom luck, he developed a disease, which was only curable by the mutant cells of the wicked Deadpool (due to his healing ability). However, the cure attained from Deadpool didn't last long, and as a result of the disease, we are left with the Tom we see today, the plant-based Tom. However, his new powers (a sudden onslaught of phsycic power) left him completley and utterly insane. Poor Tom. After all this, the last thing he needed was to lose his only friend. However, when he returned and joined the Brotherhood, he found out that Juggernaught was acting as a spy for the X-Men. In retaliation, Tom killed the small boy, Sammy, who had been the cause of Juggernaught's joining the X-Men. Tom then led an (unsuccesful) attack on the X-Mansion.
